Bundaberg

Bundaberg is probably one of those places that you have never considered for a holiday but there is really a lot on offer. It is a really good family destination and there is plenty to see and do. Bundaberg has plenty of reasonably priced accommodation, there is really good shopping, plenty of restaurants and cafes and many day trips available to help you spend your time. If you stay in the center of Bundaberg there is a good choice of three and four star accommodation. Some of it is right on the riverfront with excellent water views overlooking the marina.

Bargara Beach is only a short drive away and there are many inlets and bays that are ideal for fishing and swimming. At Mon Repos, just to the north of Bargara, there is a turtle rookery where hundreds of turtles from four different species come ashore every year to lay their eggs. The Dept of Environment and Heritage runs an information center here and regular turtle watching tours so you can take the kids to see the turtles laying and later on to see the hatchlings as they emerge from their sandy nests and make their way to the sea.

You can also take a day trip to the Great Barrier Reef and visit the beautiful Lady Musgrave Island. The tour company will pick you up from your door and drop you back again in the evening. Just inland at Appletree Creek you can visit the Flying High Bird Avery and also the Snakes Alive reptile display. In Bundaberg itself you can do a tour of the famous Bundaberg rum factory and many other interesting destinations like Schmieders Cooperage.
